Henk Remme, Remme Consult’s Director, has a strong commitment to sustainable development and has a large experience in international development cooperation. He has worked extensively across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe (> 20 countries). Henk Remme holds an MSc in Rural Development Sociology (Wageningen University and Research) and he is also a software programmer. He is fluent in Dutch, English and Spanish, he speaks German and French and has some knowledge of Kiswahili and Shona.

After starting Remme Consult in 1998 Henk has worked in over 30 projects covering 20 countries (see programmes).

Before 1998, Henk Remme worked on long term term contracts with Danida, FAO and Dutch organisations in Africa and South America:

  • 1993-1998 (Zimbabwe/DANIDA): Rural Afforestation and Woodland Management Programme (promotion of community forestry and micro enterprises). Henk acted as Team Leader and was responsible for the development of a Monitoring & Evaluation system and MIS, programme coordination, research, and formulation of Danida’s forestry component of the Agricultural Sector Support Programme in Zimbabwe. A large number of forest resource management and socio-economic studies and surveys were undertaken, looking at forest co-management, technical, institutional and socio-economic/sociological/gender aspects.
  • 1990-1992 (Andes Region/FAO): Desarrollo Forestal Participativo en los Andes (promotion of community forestry programmes in the Andes region through institutional development). Evaluation studies of national programmes in 6 countries, research, and communication. Studies were undertaken to validate the effects of agro-forestry on basis of ecological, economic, social and technical indicators.
  • 1988-1990 (Zimbabwe/FAO): Strengthening the Role and Work of Women in Rural Development (supporting women's groups with respect to improved agricultural production, income and management skills). Project Management, M&E and research. A number of agro-socio-economic feasibility and evaluation studies were conducted.
  • 1988 (Somalia/FAO): Rural Credit for Co-operatives and Small Farmers (establishment of a system for improved credit facilities for farmer groups). Socio-economic research and training of cooperatives.
  • 1985 (Burkina Faso/CON): Research on the effects of food aid on the agricultural production and marketing systems.
  • 1982-1983 (Tanzania/ILRI-DGIS-Agricultural University Wageningen): Small Irrigation Development Unit (establishment of small irrigation schemes). Land use and farming systems research and socio-economic studies.
